Miguna Miguna’s Statement on Assassination Claims

By Miguna Miguna: At about 3:45pm (Kenyan time) today, I received an email from a Tracy.Wambui@ovi.com stating:

“To Miguna. MR MIGUNA WE WILL KILL YOU WHEN YOU COME BACK.WE NEED YOUR KIDNEY. SAHIZI TUTAKUTUMIA MAJINI ZA MOMBASA.
Sent from my Nokia phone.”

I do not know who this person is. I have never communicated with her/him.

Following barely a day after the chilling one party type demonstrations against me led by the ODM MP for Nyando, Fred Outa, in Ahero, in which they not only burnt my effigy, but also participated in a mock burial of a coffin, it is clear that the Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his supports have resolved to engage in physical, emotional, psycholigical and other attacks in order not just to divert attention from the issues raised in my book; their intention is also to permanently silence dissent and kill debate.

Suppression of dissent. Muzzling one’s opponents.  Threats of assassinations.  Personal attacks.  These cannot be good for the rule of law, contituitionalism and good governance. They are not traits one can associate with a person who claims to be the best reformer in the country.

Eerily, Raila Odinga and his campaign secretariat have been DIRECTLY linked to these acts of hooliganism and lawlessness. None other than his deputy patron of Friends of Raila (FORA) lobby group, Gitobu Imanyara, addressed a press conference to hurl epithets at me and scandalise my name. He claimed, falsely, that I was a “fugitive from justice” even though I have not been charged with any criminal offence. The same day – and in what is clearly a coordinated attack – Raila’s longstanding speech-writer and consultant, Sarah Elderkin, released a broadside against me and accused me of all manner of things without any substantiation. Readers will recall that Sarah’s opinion of me is contained in pages 496-498 of my book. Moreover, she wasn’t present at the meetings she purports to report on and not privy to the discussions. How can she then refute things she is ignorant of?

Raila should come out in the open and confront the facts in my book. She cannot hide behind Caroli Omondi, Sarah Elderkin, Gitobu Imanyara and maky other busy bodies who Kenyans haven’t bestowed the title of “Prime Minister” on. Raila is DIRECTLY accountable to the people of Kenya, including me. He cannot hide forever as the truth has a stubborn way of curling against the culture of impunity.

Finally, I appeal to the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mathew Iteere, the CID Director and the Director General of the National Security Service, Mr. Gichangi, to thoroughly and expeditiously investigate the threat against me and apprehend the people behind them and have them prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Otherwise, I shall not be cowed or muzzled. The struggle will and must continue.

Kenya: Miguna’s 60,000-Word Dilemma – What Should We Believe?

I would like to engage the accusation that those of us who do not believe Miguna Miguna’s books seem to be attacking the man, rather than responding to his accusations.

Let me start by saying what is happening to Miguna is natural. To use an example that in no way suggests that Miguna Miguna is a mad man; imagine a mad-looking man accosts you and your friend in the street and accuses your friend of stealing food from him; would you believe the fellow? I do not think so. In fact, I doubt you would even give the accusations second thought. The reason is that we have a natural tendency not to accept the word of someone who looks like they are mentally unstable.

However as is being argued what if a by-stander confirms that your friend could have taken the mad man’s food. This third party’s intervention introduces credibility to the accusations and will make you look beyond the state of the mad-looking man to the accusations themselves. However what if you then learn that this third party supporting the allegations is actually a ‘certified enemy’ of your friend. You immediately go back to where you do not even consider the accusations.

A third scenario is where you are then advised that the mad-looking man is not actually mad. You are informed that despite the odd dressing, loud noises and disturbing facial expressions that he is making when putting across the accusations, the man is going through a traumatic experience in his life.

Maybe he has lost a key job that gave him prestige and public profile/power; or maybe he is going through a difficult social relationship and struggling through marital issues; or maybe he is reacting to having to re-locate back to a difficult location that he had left, vowing never to return to; a proverbial reverse trip from what looked like Canaan flowing with milk and honey, back to Egypt where he now has to slave in an environment where he is looked down on based on the colour of his skin. This means the man is not mad but just going through an emotive point in his life that has psychologically destabilized him.

This means that maybe you should look at his accusations beyond the state of his mind. So let us look at Miguna Miguna’s book itself.

Reading Miguna’s book one realises that out of the approximately 500 pages, 300 pages concentrate on Miguna Miguna himself. This is where he speaks about his growing up and early education, as well as making disparaging remarks about nearly everyone he has encountered over the years. They end with his move to Canada, where against all odds and despite difficulties settling in as an African, he actually sets up a law firm.

It is not until Chapter 9, somewhere near page 285, that he starts speaking about ODM and the Prime Minister. However again he spends the next two chapters (close to 100 pages), explaining how powerful he was in the party, how close he was to the party leader, and/or how he literally shouldered the entire burden of making the candidate the President in 2007, and thereafter ensuring Raila did not make a fool of himself whilst negotiating against President Kibaki. This means that Miguna actually only dedicates a maximum of 200 pages of a 500-page book, to his allegations against the Prime Minister.

However even within these 200 pages Miguna not only attacks Raila Odinga himself, (who he incidentally does not tie directly to any allegation he makes); but the Prime Ministers immediate family and close business and political associates as well. He especially goes after the PM’s Chief of Staff, Caroli Omondi and Permanent Secretary Isahakia; two people he clearly dislikes even more than Raila Odinga.

But let us assume 75pc of the 200 pages (150 pages) is about Raila Odinga’s ills, for the sake of building a balanced argument. Let us then consider that a single page in a book like ‘Peeling Back the Mask’ has an average of 400 words per page; which means he has written approximately 60,000 words against the Prime Minister.

Compare this with the over 50 articles (which also translate to approximately 60,000 words incidentally) that Miguna wrote in The Star over close to two years. Each of these articles were as venomous as those words in the book; but they were in support and towards protecting the Prime Minister, from the same accusations he now makes!

So here is a man who first writes a 60,000-word series of articles in a public newspaper over two years; not for profit and of his own accord (as he explains in the book), to be read by hundreds of thousands of Kenyans, saying one thing. Then writes another 60,000-words in eight months, puts them in a Sh3,300 book to make profit, and says something completely different!

In essence, asking us to believe Miguna’s book is like saying we should believe in a book written by Moses Kuria saying Uhuru Kenyatta is a bad leader, were he ever to write one.

The Main Architect of Miguna Miguna’s Attack on Raila Odinga

Did he mastermind “Peeling Back The Mask?”

Jerome Corsi is not a household name in Kenyan politics yet the country is reeling from his latest work. The American author, political commentator and conspiracy theorist best known for his two New York Times bestselling books: The Obama Nation and Unfit for Command was deported from Kenya in 2008 while on a tour to promote his last book on Barack Obama. Jerome Corsi is also a leader of the Birther movement that claims Barack Obama was not born in America and his main goal is to destroy White-American culture.

His book, The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality was an attack on then candidate Barack Obama by linking him to radical Islam, “black theology” while race baiting to paint him as not fully American. He goes on to cite Barack Obama’s use of marijuana while in college and his involvement in civil right politics among other allegations that he believed disqualified him from the presidency. The book was dismissed for its blatant lies and racism with the American fact checking organisation stating it was “a mishmash of unsupported conjecture, half-truths, logical fallacies and outright falsehoods.” and that “A comprehensive review of all the false claims in Corsi’s book would itself be a book.” The attack on Barack Obama failed and many credit his fervent rebuttal for making the hitherto influential Republican Party operative and his affiliates the outliers in American politics.

Swift boat Politics
Jerome Corsi had registered success through his 2004 publication, Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry in which he lambasted the then Democratic Party nominee John Kerry and cost him the elections. In the book, Jerome Corsi alleges that John Kerry was dishonest while serving in the military during the Vietnam War and unpatriotic due to his opposition to war. The book was promoted as a first hand account of swift boat captains and other veterans that served with John Kerry during the war and was so successful that the term swift boating is now used to represent a vicious smear campaign or political attack. It was later on discovered that none of the veterans interviewed in the book served with John Kerry and many of the interviewees accused Jerome Corsi and his co-author John O’Neill of misconstruing their statements to taint John Kerry’s record.

When Miguna Miguna was dismissed from his position as legal advisor in Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s office over allegations of misconduct his first order of business was to establish contact with Jerome Corsi and other Republican Party operatives who were attempting to make a connection between Raila Odinga and Barack Obama. The conservatives were so desperate for a line of attack yet so ill informed about Kenyan politics that for months their leading talking point was “Barack Obama, the Kenyan, communist, muslim helped his cousin, dictator, fellow muslim and communist Raila Odinga spread violence after the 2008 elections and steal the election”.

On 02/22/2012 Jerome Corsi flaunted the manuscripts to Miguna Miguna’s book on his website(wnd.com) in an article titled, Obama’s Kenyan Pal A Target of A Tell All Book: President helped put fellow tribesmen in office after supporters rioted. The article claims Raila Odinga is a sorcerer with a voracious sexual appetite. Corsi cites Miguna’s book as “further documentation” for the allegations in his 2008 New York Times No. 1 bestselling book, “The Obama Nation”.

Raila Odinga’s alleged relations with Barack Obama made him a fair target for American conservatives and the end product is the 500 page book edited and developed by Jerome Corsi and Miguna Miguna. American styled partisan politics has officially made its début in Kenyan politics.

Miguna in Canada
Miguna Miguna fled Canada where he practiced law after being acquitted of sexual abuse charges leveled against him by two Kenyan women. The imposing Miguna Miguna allegedly overpowered and sexually abused the two vulnerable women in his office where they sought his counsel over their immigration cases. He then sued the head of state of Canada; Queen Elizabeth, the Canadian Minister of Justice, the Toronto Police Board, the Crown Attorneys claiming $17.5 million in damages but his case was dismissed and he was ordered to pay millions of shillings in legal fees.

How a man of Miguna Miguna’s calibre made it to the office of the prime minister as a legal advisor remains a mystery. Miguna Miguna’s past is enough to make any employer cringe and the fact that he was at the helm of Kenyan politics is more devastating to the Raila Odinga camp than his new book.
